Here on Wall Street the arrival of the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo desktop processor has been well received. Much praise has been given to the performance enhancements and energy efficiencies of the new micro architecture.

Following this breakthrough, the financial services industry is looking intently at the Intel roadmap. Intel® vPro™ technology is receiving greater attention for its cost benefits in administration tasks across corporate desktops. Eighteen months from now, technology spend will look towards high-volume refresh capabilities with dual and multi-core platforms.

To optimise its infrastructure offering, Intel is working with solution vendors on value added propositions. Key financial services partners working proactively with us to provide compute and data grids include Gemstone, Gigaspaces, A-Speed and Platform Computing. The technological advance of the Intel Core 2 Duo, together with access to solutions to pilot and optimise configurations, puts Intel ahead of the race for low latency and high performance grid.

Data Optimisation

These partner programs look to straddle and support the wide choice of software available to financial services institutions and to respond pro-actively to the software community where joint solutions benefit from Intel Architecture. Intel Financial Services is taking this to market with important messages at the industry’s key gatherings such as Street Grid – 16 April, Linux on Wall Street – 23 April and SIFMA – 19-21 June.

Market data continues to be a focus across all aspects of the financial services market. Ongoing work by Intel engineers in conjunction with HP and the Securities Technology Analysis Centre has demonstrated optimised latency and performance on a range of Intel architecture-based configurations. For example, results surpassed previous two-way benchmarks, setting a record of four million updates per second on RMDS 6 with a multi-core optimised server configuration. FIX has gone some way to improve the market data landscape and with public adoption by CME and NYSE-ARCA, FAST is now making good progress. As FAST spreads it will influence both ends of the market data spectrum from source to consuming applications. For those organisations looking to outrun the inevitable avalanche of market data, Intel’s advanced microarchitecture is the performance enhancer they can depend on.
