fastercoolerDATACENTER Podcast
The latest fasterCITY event in London on September 24 2007 moved focus from the business of trading, risk and analytics to the problems of the supporting infrastructure.
Keynote speakers from the financial services industry highlighted and discussed the challenges met when planning, designing and building new infrastructure components. The discussions covered location, capacity planning, operational risk, emerging and mature technologies and included reference to the contemporary green debates.

Datacenter - Past, Present and Future
Chris Edmonds - Managing Director, Head of European Enterprise Computing & Enterprise Telecommunications, Morgan Stanley
Chris Edmonds of Morgan Stanley opens proceedings with a detailed description of the management of Morgan Stanley’s new datacenter facilities in London and the considerations and actions that the bank must take and plan for when looking to the future.
Faster, Cooler, Measurable
Ian Mortimer - Chief Architect, Merrill Lynch
Ian Mortimer of Merrill Lynch discusses the business drivers facing the bank, risk and regulations and their impact on technology in the datacenter. He details the banks approach, neatly summarized by Einstein: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Ian then explains the challenges of availability and recoverability and demonstrates that this is different in infrastructure design and that companies must plan for market volatility and peaks in consumer demand.

Tomorrow’s Datacenter
Ciaran Flanagan - Senior Architect EMEA, Datacenter Solutions, Intel
Ciaran Flanagan of Intel expands on the empirical experience of Intel, both in the designing and the running of Intel datacenters. He explains how he is increasingly advising firms at a strategic level as to what the macro considerations should be when looking both to the medium-term future and to managing today’s investments. Ciaran also addresses contemporary schools of thought around power thermal ratios and the impact that this now has on datacenter design.

Deconstructing the Essential Elements: Building the Infrastructure - Managing, Deploying and Designing in Flexibility
Panel Discussion Participants: Cohesive FT, Datasynapse, Fujitsu-Siemens and MPI-Europe
The event concludes with a panel discussion chaired by Nigel Woodward, Financial Services Director, Intel. The panel addresses the issues and themes raised in earlier presentations including the impact of grid technologies, power utilization rates, virtualizing workloads and what we can expect in the future with innovation in silicon and platform developments from Intel – inevitably including lower power consumption, lower heat emissions, vastly increased power features and how to handle compute power over multi-core processing designs.
