Intelligence in Finance - Autumn 2008
In this issue
Welcome to Intelligence in Finance in September - And a Hectic Year End Quarter Ahead…
Nigel Woodward, Global Director, Financial Services for Intel welcomes readers to this third edition for 2008–timed to be released with SIBOS in Vienna and HPC on Wall Street in New York. Written before the events of week of 15 September, but apposite in that SIBOS calls for focus on core principles of banking and HPC contributes to the apparently unstoppable demand for performance, latency and trading advantage–where does this race go now? Also, 15 September saw the release of Intel’s new 4 socket 6 core 45Nm Core 2 processor, with much of this issue commenting on the stunning performance figures received during pre release lab tests.
Message Translation and Heterogeneous Data Source Loading Feed Faster Risk Analysis
Enterprise risk is dependent on accessing usually vast arrays of transaction data from operational systems. M35 has tested its data transport software under load in the fasterLAB to simulate collation of data into risk engines to enable quicker turnaround and deeper analysis. Heterogeneous formats were handled in super fast time by the translation capabilities of Intel’s SOA Expressway for translation and assistance in integration.
Supply Chain Technology - We Have the Technology
This extract from full article published in Financial i Supply Chain Handbook and also on www.intelfasterfs.com under Supply Chain Business Drivers was commissioned with the Banking and SIBOS audience in mind. Taking comment from some of the most experienced minds in the European payments and supply chain finance area, the debate is again raised that change in physical and financial supply chain could be on a rapid uptick–and that technology is not the barrier–rather inertia in existing processes and protectionism of niche roles. Tuesday at SIBOS bore this out with interesting discussion on the direction of global trade and the role of banks and SWIFT going forward.
Sun Microsystems
Since the announcement of SUN’s Intel capability, collaboration between the two companies has been significant. Intel’s advanced X86 capability and SUN’s OS and FSI domain capability represent a potent combination as highlighted in two very different areas of the value chain–front office market data and SWIFT interface for payments and settlement–plus data centre relevance through Solaris10s xVM virtualisation capabilities with the Intel silicon.
Algorithmics for Risk Management
Intel financial services team are focusing on the function of risk management, an activity never out of context but surely top of agenda going forward. Intel believes its advanced new processors provide the foundation for risk solutions–no better proved out than with leading software providers such as Algorithmics who have extensively tested new chips with outstanding results. Results improved to such as extent that the risk paradigm can change limits to real time point of trade management.
SunGard Parallel - BancWare
Intel’s long established relationship with SunGard bears fruit again with the tuning the BancWare suite across Intel’s multicore processors. Again showing the importance of risk and treasury functionality in the banking solution mix. Ken Roller, Intel account manager for SunGard and Joe Sass, director of product strategy for BancWare at SunGard discuss how they have used access to Intel’s latest processors to take to prove the advantages of multi threaded software for performance.
Intel Core Microarchitecture Launches Four-Socket, Six-Core
The big news of this issue of Intelligence in Finance is the launch of the new Intel® Xeon® processor 7400 series (formerly Dunnington) with its 4 socket 6 core 45Nm technology. Dunnington takes Intel Architecture (IA) firmly into the virtualised data centre class and offers stunning performance results for multi threaded code. Early tests of FSI workloads such as market data, risk and CEP with close partners Reuters, Sun Microsystems, STAC, Aleri, KX systems, Roguewave, SunGard, Algorithmics and Wombat are giving lab results as high as 100% improvement over earlier, still recent, chipsets. This ultimate extension to the Core 2 microarchitecture range completes the success picture of IA over the last two years.
Thomson Reuters Put the Data in Risk Data Management
Often the bridesmaid at the risk management technology wedding–data management is often not given adequate attention. Here we see the focus on the data populating functions of risk management by the clear leader in both disciplines–Thomson Reuters. Use of Intel fasterLAB facilities has enabled testing and simulation, with access to the highest spec testing facilities.
Preparing for Multicore
Consultants Concertant expose their expertise in multicore engineering with this glance at the results of recent market surveys on the readiness of the industry to be able to take advantage of multicore. With a world built on single threading, potential exists for a gap to build between technology availability and ability to absorb into the business. Working with Intel’s Software Solutions Group and IT@Intel–Concertant looks to help nurture the industry on the multicore journey.
