With the November 1 deadline approaching, the intense speculation and uncertainty toward the end of last year has given way to a more pragmatic attitude in the market, says PJ Di Giammarino of JWG-IT. However, he warns that other than a few lawyers and consultants, very few vendors can put credible numbers on MiFID implementation costs.

The Exchange landscape looks set to shift dramatically over the next few years as banks demand new efficiencies. As traditional players, new MTFs such as Equiduct and Chi-x and new entrants battle to draw and create liquidity, a key factor in maintaining a competitive advantage is reducing the TCO (capital and ongoing cost) for technology. In context this has to be rolled into the current fixation on increasing speed and lowering latency.

Recent research conducted by Intel in the UK has shown the new Intel® Xeon® 5300 family of quad-core processors will handle much higher volumes than its predecessors. Intel has collaborated with the finance community to understand the technical requirements of low latency platforms to deliver optimally configured architectures.
