As you read this edition of Intelligence in Finance – summer vacations will have faded into history and the Q4 race begun.
In the last two issues we have focused on the quest for low latency in trading and the challenges of the data mountain – from market data to the new strictures of regulatory reporting. In this issue we apply a more technology-centric approach and focus on the data center itself - the challenges of design, power consumption, the green debate, and in the context of the financial services industry (FSI) its relevance to the effective management of operational risk.

The mood of MiFID conversations has shifted and now the political centers and some large players mean business. Seven member states, representing approximately 60% of the market, have so far been officially recognized as ready for 1 November, with some of the ‘unready’ cancelling holidays to get the job done.

What’s a green data center? Do they use green boxes? Are they mean - like Mean Joe Green? Do they support Greenpeace? Or do they just save green, as in greenbacks? Well all are true. Green is the new data center strategy.

Perhaps nowhere is greater computing power more critical and profitable than in fixed income derivative trading, where some organizations have doubled their incomes by expanding computing resources. These firms require more performance, data center efficiency, workload management and scalability to maximize these resources – capabilities delivered by grid computing.
